Understand Shearling Before Purchasing A New Coat

By Jim Marcus

Everyone who enjoys fashion loves a nice coat or jacket. They're one of the more popular items in the fashion world, since we get to wear them on a regular basis. Fur jackets are one of the most desirable types of jackets.

There are many types of fur that are often used in making jackets. There's also a wide variety of quality and this is extremely important when purchasing a new fur jacket. The better the quality, the longer the jacket will last. One of the factors that determine the quality of the fur is the country in which the fur originates from. Shearling is one of the most sought after types of jackets.

The quality of shearling varies depending on what part of the world it's produced in. Some of the features of high quality shearling include its durability, softness and how light the material is. A quality shearling coat can be used during extreme cold or on more of a mild day.

Many experts believe that the highest end sheepskin products come from Spain. Argentina has also made a name in quality sheepskin products. One of the main differences between sheepskin from Spain and average products is that Spanish sheepskin is supple. Since their products are so supple, the highest-end shearling coats can be made with Spain's products.

The heavier the sheepskin, the less flexible it is. What separate Spain and Argentina from other producers, is the weight. Countries like Australia, England and New Zealand produce heavier sheepskin, which makes it less expensive and lower quality.

When the shearling is heavy, it becomes difficult to make use of them in jackets. One country that has done a very good job with heavier materials is Uruguay. Despite the fact that Uruguay has heavier materials, they've still managed to produce some quality stuff. They produce some of the best quality jackets for intensely cold weather.

With the high demand of shearling coats, more and more fake shearlings are available. If you can't pay the hefty price for an authentic, this is a fine option. They make some very nice faux shearlings. Many of these faux shearlings will use sherpa, which is a fake wool.

A quality shearling jacket will can cost above $1,000. Before you make a large investment on a high end coat, find out where the pelts are coming from. This way you know what you're getting and hopefully it will last you many years!
