How Building Refurbishment Can Assist With Urban Regeneration

By Gary Clifford Mcintyre

Urban regeneration is a big business that is necessary to inject life into neglected areas. It requires a massive clean up as well as a reshaping of the areas public image. Money needs to be introduced into the area and public facilities need to be invested in to encourage people to inhabit these areas that may not be so favourable. Building refurbishment will be necessary to improve infrastructure.

The first steps to be undertaken include a literal clean up of the area. This should encompass litter being removed and dirty areas being scrubbed clean. Dustbins should be put up and some effort should be made to keep sidewalks looking good. The police should start a drive to clamp down on crime in the area to make it safe once again.

Public parks and communal spaces make for a good atmosphere and sense of community. Parks should be created for children and the general public to use. It should become a feature of why people should move into that area and not somewhere else. The energy and activity generated in a tight knit community does discourage criminals.

Old infrastructures would need to be restored. Old apartments and shops would need an injection of cash to get them trading again. You would need to attract some investor attention to stimulate this growth once again. You would need to obtain special permits and licensing to carry this on, but it would be a great way to stimulate cash flow in the area.

You would like to look into introducing libraries and schools to motivate to people why they should move there. They would need pragmatic motivation to moving their lives to another place. You would have to take care of all their needs for them to move easily.

Make sure to set a decent amount of budget aside to contribute towards the public relations and marketing needs for the campaign. You would need something quite dramatic to get to your targets attention and make sure you get to everyone. You would need to enlist the help of experienced estate agents to sell properties in your area so your campaign would need to be pretty extensive. It would increase the value of the space dramatically after a while.

If you are interested in urban regeneration you will definitely find some satisfaction in being able to help other people as a direct spin off from your efforts. It entails good planning, total building refurbishment and secure capital to get off the ground. Once it has been done successfully though t can change the lives of many people.
