The secret of all successful blogs is return traffic

By Natallies Newstons

There's one factor that always tells me how well a blog is doing and that is return traffic. To me the fact that someone has come back to see what's new is the best indication of a quality blog. However many webmasters get caught up trying to attract new readers, but how can you keep the users you already have?

Keeping your blog up to date with new and relevant posts is essential because people need a reason to subscribe. If you're only posting once every month then there's no real need to come back that often for most people, they can just read it all at once in six months. People always want the latest info and if you can't give it to them they will go somewhere else.

I realise it can be hard to keep up with a weekly posting schedule, sometimes you just run out of things to say. Instead why not give some of your readers a chance to speak by allowing guest posting? It's a great way to give your readers another take on things.

Message boards and forums are an easy trick to get people coming back, mostly because it's an endless supply of free content. The hard part is getting the community to a level where it has enough users to sustain itself. Can be tough in the beginning but worth it in my opinion.

If you want people to notice your blog then you really have to stand out from the crowd. It's easy to fall into the routine of just making 500 word posts with an occasional picture. Why not try making a video instead, mix it up if you want to get people's attention.

Getting a new blog off the ground can be really difficult, especially when there's so much competition out there. However I really feel if you can get a base readership that keep coming back to your blog then it will just be a question of growing naturally. The secret in today's social media world is to create content people want to send to their friends.
