Tips for planning your wedding in the Cayman Islands

By Grant Ceville

When couples are planning their weddings more and more of them are choosing a vacation destination as the back drop for their special day. Planning a destination wedding offers the couple and their guests a chance to experience a new place, allow the exotic scenery to inspire the dcor, and even involve local customs in the ceremony.

Beach weddings have also become popular among couples today. The perfect way to combine these wonderful new wedding trends is to have your wedding on one of the beautiful Cayman Islands. It is easier than you may think to have your wedding in this island paradise, and here are a few things you should know before you head off to begin your happily ever after in the Cayman Islands.

There is no waiting period for couples who would like to have their wedding with the beautiful beaches and sparkling waters of the Caribbean surrounding them, but you will need to be sure you bring the proper documentation to make the ceremony official. You will need to contact the Passport and Corporate Services Office in the Cayman Islands to obtain a non-residents marriage license and a list of all of the licensed Marriage Officers in the Islands. The cost for a non-residents license for citizens of the United States is $250. For residents of other countries you should contact the office for current pricing. Once you have selected one of the Marriage Officers you will need a letter of authorization from them.

Once you have completed the first bit of paperwork you will also need to bring a few things with you in addition to the completed paperwork. You will need to provide proof of your age and citizenship by showing either your passport or birth certificate. In the Cayman Islands, no one under the age of 18 can marry without parental consent.

If you were married previously you will be required to provide divorce paperwork or a death certificate to prove you are no longer legally married. You will need proof of how you arrived on the island as well; this can be easily proven with either an"embarkation/disembarkation card" provided by your cruise ship, or a Cayman Islands Immigration Department card. Finally, you will need to have two witnesses at your ceremony.

A great way to avoid having to deal with all of the paperwork by your self is to contact one of the many cruises or resorts that travel to or line the shores of the Cayman Islands. These vacation experts have entire staffs whose only job is creating memorable wedding experiences for couples who want to have a beautiful destination wedding. Not only will these planners be able to assist you in executing all of the paper work necessary to make your wedding official and legal, they will also be able to take care of everything from flowers and catering, to wedding entertainment and accommodations for you and your guests. Working with a resort or cruise party planning can be very rewarding and create a stress free wedding experience so you can truly enjoy your very special day.
