Easily Design A Child Knight Costume Quickly

By Christine Carroll

The appeal of knights and battling dragons is strong for boys and anything that gets them moving and using their imagination makes parents happy. You can encourage and help them with make believe time by creating their own child knight costume easily and quickly with stuff you have around the home already.

You'll need a gray sweat suit, preferably a hooded sweatshirt, but it isn't absolutely necessary. Don't worry about any design on the front; you'll cover that up later. If you don't have gray, black will work just as well.

To make the armor you can use silver insulation, it is thin and lightweight. It will go over your child's head, so measure from the bottom of the waist to the bottom of the back for the right size. Tape down the bottoms into a point or rounded and make a neck hole in the middle that is big enough for their head to slip through.

If you don't have silver insulation lying around, cardboard and foil will work just as well. Cut two breastplates, identical in size and shape, with a rounded neckline and shoulder points. Tape the shoulder points from back and front together so it will slip over your child's head. All that is left is to cover in foil. You can put a miniature shield on the front as a symbol also.

Use a milk jug, large popcorn paper bucket or paper paint bucket for a helmet by cutting out an opening for the face. Paint the helmet you just made silver or cover it in foil to complete the look.

No knight is complete without his sword, using sturdy cardboard, cut the shape of a sword out. Paint the handle black and then either paint the sword silver or cover it with foil.

Some knights have capes, and kids love capes. You can pick up a cheap one anywhere or you can make your own from some lightweight material, even a colored sheet. If your child also wants a shield, just cut the shape from some cardboard and design and paint it however you like. When it is ready, cut two small slits in the center of the shield, then fit a piece of Velcro or other material through that can be used as a handle.

When your son puts the costume on for the first time, he'll feel like a real knight and be ready for battle. This is perfect for Halloween also. You can make a child knight costume easily and for a fraction of the cost of a store bought one. And, it will be your child's own unique design to show off.
