The Right Way To Store Tablecloths

By Fabian Douglas

Do you face problems of un-pressed, bad smelling tablecloths while going to use them for a sudden dinner party? If you blame your tablecloth quality every time for this problem, let me tell you that the problem generally is in your way of storing them rather than your tablecloth. Below are a few tips for storing your tablecloths properly.

Before storing - The first thing you need to make sure before storing is that you have cleaned your tablecloth properly and there are no food traces on it which can attract insects. Drying them perfectly is equality important as moisture is the main reason for fungus attacks.

Hanging - When it comes to storing then hanging is the best thing you can think of. Before hanging just make three to four folds lengthwise in your tablecloth and then making only one fold place it on a hanger. Don't use wire for hanging as there is a danger of rust marks and sharp folds leading to weakening of the cloth fabric along the wire. Use plastic, wooden or padded hangers or fold a towel on your hanger to reduce the center crease. The best benefit of hanging is that air can play through your fabrics and keep them pest free and won't allow any foul smell in your tablecloth.

Storing Flat - If you don't have space to hang your tablecloths then no problem, you can keep them flat as well. Fold them and wrap them in acid-free tissue paper and store in a cool place. Acid-free tissue papers doesn't turn your tablecloth yellow like the normal ones so try to use them only. Plastic bags, wooden shelves, cardboard boxes can also turn them yellow due to the flumes that are ejected by them. You can also use a bag for storing your tablecloth, but make sure you don't use too small of a bag, which can result in too many folds and wrinkles.

Organize - Keep your tablecloths organized so that you can get the correct one very easily when required. I have seen many times that people tend to forget the color of the tablecloth they need and end up opening up all the tablecloths in the closet to get the one they need. Putting tags on the hanger with the tablecloth size on them is a very good idea which I discovered recently. If you are storing them flat then use a ribbon to fasten the same size tablecloths with their napkin pairs which will allow you get the correct one easily.

I too try these tips and believe me these are very helpful. Another thing I would like you to do is that unfold and refold your tablecloths at least twice a year to reduce the stress of folding at the same place for a long time.
