How to Create an SEO-Friendly Web Page?

By Walter Stanley Hoares

Constructing content and text that search engines "like" simply implies that the search engines can understand and properly categorize the text. Search Engine robots check each page for things like titles, headlines and text and they look for keywords that are consistently used throughout. This provides clarity and helps the search engines understand the content of your page or blog.

Which is the best way to configure your page so that the search engines will understand what you want them to know about your page? Of course the keywords are the most important inclusion for the title, headlines and content - and the URL if possible. Weaving these all together takes some creativity, but including your keywords in each of these three areas can help Google and others properly classify and catalogue your page.

Before jumping into construction of the web page, consider the main keywords and develop a plan to incorporate them into the title, headlines and text. Producing content that supports these keywords then supports the theme of the page and leave the search engines a little more confident about what the page is about. Many page owners wrestle with actually doing this, so here are a few ideas:

Setting the Title Setting the title tags is a simple matter since less attention has to be paid to proper grammar and language construction. Using a keyword or keyword phrase rather than the name of your organization is a 'must' though. Many first time optimizers set the title of the page to the company name without understanding that unless you want to attract the attention of users that already know your company name; the page title needs to use the keywords rather than a name.

Give some attention here to geographic location. If your target market is located in a single area, include the name of that area in your title, headlines and text. A retailer selling surfboards in Dallas might title his page something like "surfboards in Dallas" to attract surfers looking to buy such a thing in central Texas.

Setting the Headlines - Making the headlines or the text contained within the 'h' tags consistent with the title is also important. These should use the same keywords and if possible, they should be in the same order. This is important to establish prior to designing your page because some headlines won't fit nicely into certain tabbed page designs.

Developing Content - The common search engine robots visit each page, remember that the robots are mechanical and cannot discern content and meaning. They simply look for common words and phrases. Again, place your keywords strategically within the page text so that the robots will see them and match them to the same words used in the title and headlines. The interesting part to this exercise is trying to incorporate keywords into common language on your page.

Use the bold or 'b' tags around instances where your keywords and phrases appear within the page text. These call a little extra attention to the phrase. When the engines come through and analyze the page content, headlines and titles and find your keyword phrases present in each area, they will be fairly confident that your page relates to the topic described by your keywords.

Content Style - After coming up with a basic page design and keyword plan, you are ready to install your text. Writing for internet readers is just a matter of keeping a conversational tone to your composition, so it is important to avoid overuse of keywords or keyword phases. Search Engines are also on watch for overuse as well. Still, it can be challenging to work in keyword phrases to the text, so you will need a bit of creativity to make this seem conversational.

An Epoxy Flooring installation company in the Chicago area that is using the keyword phrase "Epoxy Flooring" might use a sentence such as "Industrial plant operators have know that Epoxy Flooring offers....." A company providing sprinkler system installation in the Dallas area would be able to title the main page "Lawn Irrigation in Dallas" and use the same phrase as the first headline as well as in the first line of text. "Lawn Irrigation contractors in Dallas install hundreds of residential irrigation systems each spring.." For searches then containing these keywords, the company web page would be more likely to appear.

As text composition may not be every business owner's strength, these simple tips for on-page optimization provide proven ways to improve the way search engines will view your page. And if the search engines understand what the page is about, you are then in a position to begin competing for traffic.
