Ideas for a summer party

By Denzel Murdoch

A Fancy Dress party is always the best way to make your celebration stand out from the others, so what is better than to throw one of these in the party season, the summer. The sun is out, people don't want to stay in any more, but go out and have fun. We can think about our clothes again and not just about keeping warm, so let's celebrate with an elaborate party that encourages people to create outrageous Fancy Dress Costumes.

Putting on that costume is a great way to escape from the rest of life, become the person you dressed as for a night, save the world or wreak havoc as Superman or Lex Luthor. Those throwing the party have the licence to think of the most outrageous theme and see all their friends combine a sense of the ridiculous with a sense of creativity.

History shows that dressing in ridiculous outfits is part of our genetic makeup; the more people have had the more lavish and absurd their costumes have always been. Charles II, the king who made it legal for women to work on the stage was notoriously fond of dressing up himself.

A couple of centuries later the allegedly moralistic Victorians were continuing this trend with elaborate games of charades taking place in country mansions. A stay at another's country house was punctuated by the elaborate version of the game that the Victorians would play.

It was in the more recent 1920's however, that the costume party originated. An inter-war generation, many of them newly impoverished gentry, were determined to make their own mark by throwing a series of lavish and decadent fancy dress parties with outrageous and elaborate themes. The tabloid press named the party goers, Bright Young People (or Flappers) and covered their movements in the 1920's in an era that can still be seen as the high point for partying.

This group, named the Bright Young People (or Flappers) threw parties with lavish themes that went from simply cross dressing to dressing as animals, gods and a range of other outrageous ideas. It was they who were to set the trend for enjoying one's self by dressing up in an elaborate outfit that combines creativity with an outrageous determination to have fun.

Perhaps we should acknowledge the heritage that this group left by throwing a 1920's party this summer? Flapper dresses and trilbies are certainly an exciting look. But it is by simply dressing up that we recall the spirit of fun they left, so any costume will do the trick.

Set a theme that challenges your friends to be as creative as possible and most importantly, will allow you to look great, with that one perfect costume. Recall a decade or a style or allow them a free reign and watch their imaginations run away with them. It is amazing what people can come up with.
