Making Handcrafted Jewelry for Money

By Laura Kay

If you're looking for a way to make more money from home, then you should really consider learning how to make custom jewelry. Making jewelry can be a fun hobby that can really make some money if you get good at it and begin selling on your own. Jewelry making is a relaxing way to unwind for a few minutes or a few hours. Of course, you don't have to try to sell your custom jewelry. Instead you could simply give it away as gifts, wear it yourself, or offer to repair other pieces of jewelry with the skills you learn from jewelry making.

Starting your own home based jewelry business is not nearly as complex as it sounds. You just need to plan out your actions ahead of time. If you want to make your own custom jewelry, either for your own use or for selling, then you'll want to think about these general steps to get going:

The first thing you'll want to do is to begin looking at different types of jewelry designs and jewelry making methods. You'll want to keep an eye on jewelry ads in magazines and on television, fashion and jewelry trends in your local stores and even watch what type of jewelry celebrities are wearing. You will even want to look up some tutorials aimed at jewelry making for profit. You'll soon realize that almost everyone is wearing some sort of handmade jewelry and that many different jewelry pieces are made with similar techniques and materials.

Second, you'll want to teach yourself some basic jewelry making skills. You can do this in a number of different ways. You can buy some jewelry making books, read some free jewelry making blogs, download jewelry making videos and even attend jewelry making classes that are sometimes held at local universities. You may also want to pick up some jewelry making materials to practice. Whenever you're learning a new skill, I recommend practicing with some cheap craft supplies so you don't spend a lot of money while you're still learning. You can make the entire process a more social event by going to classes with a good friend or two!

Finally, when you've created some jewelry pieces of your own and you're ready to start selling your creations you can think about the sales process. Fortunately, jewelry can be sold practically anywhere these days. You can sell your jewelry on the internet, at craft shows, through local newspaper advertisements and even in small storefronts and through your family members. There are lots of different things you can do advertise your beaded jewelry business and there are lots of venues you can use to sell and display your jewelry.

By creating your own handmade jewelry you can begin making some extra cash on the side and maybe even grow your jewelry business into something much bigger than you can imagine! Learning how to make your own jewelry gives you lifelong skills in a craft and it can teach you a lot about running your own business. By making and selling your own custom jewelry you can make new friends, make some money and have fun all at the same time!
