Most men have decent enough legs to pull off wearing shorts, but there are a few rules that need to be discussed. Gentlemen please take note, this concerns you.
Size
There seems to be a fork in the road concerning size when certain men wear shorts. Some go for the two sizes too small and some go for the two sizes too large. Both are unflattering and one is offensive. No one has any desire to see your jingle jangle outlined in your shorts, except of course if you work in a particular type of establishment. Garments in general that are too large make the wearer look larger than they actually are. To ensure a proper fit, take your handy-dandy tape measure and wrap it around your waist, where your belt usually sits. Do not measure on top of your belt. After you take note of the measurement (in inches) set out to look for a pair of shorts in the same size as the measurement you took. Now here is the important part: try them on. Not at home, not in the middle of the store - in a change room. It is worth the extra five minutes. Not all clothing manufacturers use the same sizing scale when they cut fabric, so you cannot always rely on a 38 waist actually being 38 inches. Try them on.
Fabric
Wearing shorts made of good fabric is not as intimidating as it sounds. Here are some simple things to remember: shiny is bad, mesh is bad, fluorescent is bad, holes are bad, stains are bad. Athletic shorts are for the gym only, not for grocery shopping, dinner out, work, the bar, PTA meetings, playing golf or going to a movie. Mesh and fluorescent colors should not be worn at anytime. Any garment with holes or stains in it should be torn up and used as rags. Some good fabrics for shorts are cotton twill's, linens, gaberdine or even denim if the style is done well.
Pleats
This one is simple. Pleats are only for the golf course. Dress pants should not even have pleats. They are not flattering for any body type.
Pockets
Every man needs sufficient pockets. Your wallet should not be large enough to misshape your pocket, and your cargo short pocket size should correspond with your age. A teen wearing cargo shorts will have pockets so large they cover most of the leg, but as the wearer grows older the cargo pockets should shrink until they disappear by the age of 50.
Cut offs
These are always a no-no. Always. Economizing by cutting off the legs of an old pair of pants to turn them into shorts is not acceptable. Do not tuck your t-shirt in, add a belt and clip your phone onto the belt either. The look is bad and unflattering. You will look more silly wearing this outfit on a hot day than just a full length pair of jeans.
Swimwear
Some men feel it is alright to wear swimwear all the time. Swimwear is for swimming just as cars are for driving. There are many gentlemen who have a pleasing physique and are very suited to wearing swimwear. To these men, the same rule applies, swimwear is for swimming.
Underwear
When you have selected a pair of shorts that fit properly, is made of a good fabric, do not have pleats or too many pockets, and did not used to be a pair of pants, then it is time to ensure you are wearing the correct underwear. It is most unfortunate when a gentleman is wearing a nice pair of tailored shorts and you can see the lines around his thighs from boxer briefs. Or perhaps he is sitting in a coffee shop and the legs of his boxer shorts are visible. The worst of course is a tatty band of worn out elastic showing above the waistband of the shorts. Gentlemen take this opportunity to look through your ancient collection of undergarments and assess the need for an underwear makeover. Are the boxers worn out and likely to show when wearing shorts? Are the briefs so worn out that a belt is needed just hold them up? Do the boxer briefs leave a line imprinted on your thigh from their old leg bands? Why not try some of the new styles of briefs available now. They are made from lighter more breathable fabrics and styled in such a way to protect the boys from overheating. Elastic bands are thinner and more comfortable. Plus, the choices are not just white, blue and black anymore. Patterns and colors for every taste are now available.
