Contemporary Interior Design For Homes

By Nathan Wolpind

Just like most art, interior design is a field that is open to interpretation. People can describe a particular design in several contrasting ways. In recent years, modern styles which usually refer to design of the mid-century have converged with contemporary interior design. Though probably borrowing elements from other era's, latest deign fashions have become easier to distinguish due to the use of sleek lines and emphasis on minimizing clutter. This theme has already been dubbed as contemporary.

Following suit are designs applied to home appliances. With innovations in entertainment, plasma televisions or flat screen LCD's have become a must-have for many a home theater owner. The shape and aesthetic look of these pieces of equipment compliment the layouts currently being utilized in most homes. They are made in such a way that they can sit solely on a rack, form part of a dynamic entertainment center or can simply be attached to a wall. Home owners are swapping bulky sofas with angular shaped furniture made from chrome, glass metal or wood. Much emphasis is also being placed on furnishings that allow you to conserve space.

Paint colors are also kept simple but not boring through selecting bolder oranges, lime greens and reds as well as subdued grays, dark browns, purples and blacks. Current trends shy away from loud and busy patterns. Similarly, texture is one of the key elements that contribute to contemporary interior design. They can be present in the paint used for walls, curtains, rugs, linens and upholstery. Multiple textures can be mixed and matched for a more modern appeal.

A big element of contemporary interior design is the emphasis placed in incorporating new materials and techniques. Most commonly infused are glass, concrete and metal.

Glass is a common material used to create a distinction. Blown glass can give the same effect of artistic elements like sculptures and wall hanging but also can serve a dual purpose such as lighting fixtures. Glass frosted lamps, tables and cabinets made of glass bring a unique look and feel to a home which is in contrast to older themes which use to employ a lot of wood.

Complimenting glass is the use of metal which responds to the simplistic nature of modern design. It creates a smooth, straightforward feel and is there to enhance other decorative elements. They can be used as glass table frames, cabinet handles and chair legs.

From countertops to floors and furniture, concrete can bring a lot of decorative potential. Still in its early stages of being a decorative element, concrete can create numerous modern effects when finished to do so.

Bringing all these elements together for that modern edge to your homes interior gives you the perfect opportunity to hire a designer. Someone that you can work with to produce an exceptional contemporary home.
