Save Money On Wedding Day Photography

By Charles Murray

Weddings are filled with scenes of precious memories and photography is the tool with which these scenes can be captured. Traditional professional photography costs, however, can be too much for some wedding budgets. Couples can still have beautiful photographs of the wedding day by getting creative and relying on various resources for capturing the memories.

Hiring a professional photographer is one obvious option for those planning a wedding. It is imperative though that when discussing various plans with photographers that the cost of the negatives are included in the estimate. Often a photographer will present plans which include prints of various sizes and with varieties of special photographic effects, such as tinting or shading. If the negatives are not included in the package, every time a copy of a picture is needed or wanted the couple has to order them through the photographer at a much higher rate than a standard copying fee. If years pass by and the photographer can't be found, it does not mean that the couple can have the pictures reproduced by anyone else. The photographer holds ownership of the picture rights unless there is proof of another agreement. Most photo studios will not make copies of professional pictures unless there is a written release, and even this will not always be enough.

Couples can approach professional photographers and request a discount package, perhaps by only needing the photographer for during the ceremony instead of all day. They should let the photographer know that other studios are being consulted and prices compared. Working together to negotiate a lower price is in everyone's best interests and can help alleviate wedding budget pressures.

Wedding couples don't have to compromise quality when trying to trim spending from the budget. The wedding day can be divided into smaller time frames, such as behind the scenes, family, the wedding party, the ceremony, and the reception. When each of these time frames are looked at individually the couple can find certain portions of the day where they truly want a professional photographer, and others where it is not a priority. Many professional photographers charge certain fees based on time involved so by reducing the number of hours required to be present during the overall day, costs can be reduced.

Couples should also look to family and friends who might be amateur photographers and are more than willing to take pictures of certain aspects of the day. Maybe an uncle would be the perfect one for getting pictures of the groom getting ready for the ceremony or the couple's first dance. Digital photography advances make it possible for even amateurs to make sure that good pictures are taken. Cameras are also of higher qualities and can produce great pictures without formal lighting and other extras.

Another way to have inexpensive pictures of the wedding day is to place disposable cameras at each reception table as part of the decorations and encourage guests to take pictures with them throughout the evening. The only costs involved are prices to purchase the cameras and the costs of developing the film. Some great pictures can be taken this way of small moments that the wedding party might not otherwise see.

Money can also be saved on wedding photography by creating a social media page dedicated to the wedding day, in particular the pictures. Guests can be invited to upload any pictures they take to the site. If they are aware of this ahead of time many of them would be more than happy to take a few extra minutes to take some contributing shots. Creating a virtual wedding album is a great way to compile all of the memories and share them with friends and family.

If family members and friends are not able to provide some of the photography at the wedding, the couple can search for local talented amateurs who are able to provide photography services for less and are most likely willing to provide the film or digital files as well. The wedding couple can look for art students or photography hobbyists and work with them as they would work with a professional agency. A good way to ensure the quality of work is to hire an amateur for the engagement picture and put the wedding photography contract contingent on the results of the wedding photographs.

Saving money on wedding photography can be done and it does not have to be at the expense of the photo album. If couples think outside the box and are creative in their approaches there are sure to be more than enough wonderful pictures of the wedding day.
