Prep Fashion For Men

By Trevor Burns

Summer has finally arrived and with it the baring of limbs, as we dust off the shorts and tees for their annual outing in men's designer fashions. This year has seen a return to a much smarter, preppy look with the welcome return of the season must-have 'chino' designs and casually draped jumper but with the added bonus of infusing colour to lift the look from staid catalogue model to lively man about town!

On your bottom half, chinos, either in long or short variations, are well matched with dazzling deck shoes in unconventional colours and bold blocking designs. Espadrilles are also making a comeback in some unusually radiant shades while retro-cool suede ankle boots by Pointer, and Clae, make men's designer fashion so effortlessly cool.

For fitted and flattering shorts, look to go neutral in your colour choice to create your base with examples from SixPack France with their Cinto range, Coin shorts by Libertine-Libertine and all ending low-thigh. Alternatively, more casual styles in men's fashion sporting subtle hues come from the loose fitting cargo shorts from trend masters Norse Projects Lindar range, Ringspun's Nimrod and Bench's Frisk line.

If you would like shorts to be the centrepiece of your wardrobe Junk de Luxe's bold brights or WESC Conway shorts can be. The Duncan from Tommy Hilfiger and Penfield's Grafton Patchwork are great checked options but for true army style delve into Superdry or Diesel for their Core Military Lite or Sislargo-Sho Camo, or really pump up the volume with Supremebeing, and their progressive camouflage cargo shorts. Shorts needn't be similar there's everything from Humor and Jack & Jones' dropped crotch, the cuffed finished, or rip it up with Levi and Replay in denim.

Having chosen a neutral shade of short, adding colour to your top half will be a welcome addition. To keep in tune with the preppy style, opt for a bold polo-style t-shirt with your chinos either from Ralph Lauren's Polo collection, Grand Slam by Nike or Farah Vintage labels. To sharpen up your look and bring in a bit of old school charm introduce Fred Perry and Lacoste into the ensemble as well as as the latest neck lines of Asos and Duck & Cover to spice things up further.

Shirts also compliment the style in long or short sleeve with slim fit in subtle hues from Universal Works Syke range, Scotch & Soda, Duchamp and Collezioni by Armani or high colour from Jil Sander and Raf Simons. Look at contrast collars or bold patterns with Unconditional's V Panel, the Humor Rowdy range, Boxfresh and Kolor. Add vibrant checks from YMC's Double Weave, All Saints Stockholm, Soul Cal, Joakim styles by Nudie and different lines by BOSS.

Put the icing on the cake with a laid-back round neck Our Legacy sweater which matches the bottom half of your outfit, a stripy John Smedley number, or even Pringle and J. Lindeberg's slim-fitting v necked versions. A loose flowing cardigan by Bolongaro, or Duffer of St George in drape or shawl neck should be enough to complete summer's preppy style.
