Big And Tall Men's Clothing In Store And Online

By Bill Hughes

Shopping for big and tall men's clothing has never been easier. There are shops on every major high street where men can try items on and get an idea of how measurements vary for different brands. Once a gentleman knows what size shirt, trousers, jacket, shoe and sportswear he wears, he can search online at his convenience from home.

It is a good idea if the shopper knows what his various measurements are before he begins any shopping trip, whether real or virtual. He may need the assistance of his wife or a friend. The neck measurement should be taken at the base of the throat, where he wants the collar to fit. The chest measurement should be taken from where it is the widest.

The waist should be measured where it is comfortable for the pants to fit. Hips should be measured eight inches below the waist or at its widest part. The inside leg, or inseam measurement is taken from the top to the bottom of the leg, where he desires to have the hem located.

Most big names use basically the same set of measurements. Some manufacturers may do things slightly differently. Basically, casual shirts go from a chest size of 40-42 in. (M), 52-54 in. (2XL) up to 64-66 in. (5XL), with intermediate sizes in between.

Dress shirts start at a 42 inch chest, 15.5 inch collar up to a 21-inch collar and a 64-inch chest measurement. Pants, jeans and shorts are sold in waist measurements between 34 and 54 inches. Inside leg measurements begin at 27 inches (Extra short), 31 inches for regular up to 36 inches for Extra Long. Men's underwear, shorts and swim suits start at 34 to 36 inches in the waist ((S), 50 to 52 inches (2XL) up to 62 to 64 inches (5XL).

Suits and jackets start with a 38-inch chest and 38-inch waist and go up to chest measurements of 60 inches with a 57-inch waist. Footwear starts at size 5 English/size 38 European up to 12 English/47 European. Again, sizes may differ for certain designers and manufacturers.

Most major department stores have extended ranges of big and tall men's clothing. Some designers and brand names have their own stores. If the customer cannot find what he is looking for in store, there may be a wider choice over the internet. Online shopping has the benefit of browsing in the convenience of the customer's own home, trying on for size at his leisure and being able to return the merchandise if the fit isn't perfect or if he is unhappy in any way.
